For years now, each of this Southern German band’s albums has easily topped its predecessor, uniting the very best of European und US power metal with an original note.So it comes as no surprise that the number of BRAINSTORM fans is growing steadily, as evidenced by their successful first European headlining tour in 2005 and the chart entries of their last two albums “Soul Temptation” (Germany: #73) and “Liquid Monster” (Germany: #72, Hungary: Top 10). BRAINSTORM is definitely at the forefront of European power metal. In 2007 Swabia’s finest have already made some noise with the re-issues of their first two albums, “Hungry” and “Unholy”, and their critically acclaimed “Honey From The B’s” DVD. Their next, as-yetuntitled studio album is scheduled for release in January 2008. But the fan community, hungry for new songs, only needs to have a little more patience, because the band, fronted by the charismatic singer Andy B. Franck, will deliver an EP in October entitled “Fire Walk With Me”. Besides the title track in its original form and as a remix, the EP will include another unreleased song and two live tracks, setting the stage for the band’s biggest release so far. There’s no escaping BRAINSTORM in the near future!

In January the new album ‘Downburst’ by Brainstorm is to be released and to warm up the fans the band releases a single. That is to say; this is not just a single with one or two tracks. No, with five songs this ‘Fire Walk With Me’ seems to be an EP.

They who know Brainstorm know what to expect here. With rugged, raw riffs, pushing rhythms, variation in between the songs and catching vocals by front man Andy B. Franck Brainstorm brings heavy metal. The first two tracks on this disc are new tracks: ‘Fire Walk With Me’ and ‘Breathe’. The first one even has two versions on here: once in the single version and once in the so called firestarter mix. In the single edition it is a typical Brainstorm song full of the previously mentioned characteristics, but in the firestarter mix it is nothing else than a compulsory search to bring the song just a bit different. Needless to do so. ‘Breathe’ will not be included on the new album, but also not been released by Brainstorm before. A so called exclusive non album track. It is heavier than the song this single is about and I like this more. As add-on two extra tracks in their live edition have been added: ‘Worlds Are Coming Through’ and ‘Painside’; both tracks which can be found on the previous CD ‘Liquid Monster’.

This is a nice refreshment for the fans to have them wait impatiently on the new album.

Um uns bereits einen kleinen Vorgeschmack auf das im Januar erscheinende neue Album zu geben, bringen BRAINSTORM die Single “Fire Walk With Me” unters Volk. Das Stück ist ein flotter Stampfer mit ordentlich Groove, das mir jedoch rhythmisch zu unruhig daherkommt und bei dem mir jedoch ein wenig die Melodik älterer Brainstorm-Klassiker fehlt. Es bleibt ein gutklassiger Power-Metal-Song, der jedoch hinter den Erwartungen, die ich in das neue Material der Schwaben gesetzt habe, zurückbleibt. Hoffentlich wird das Niveau des neuen Albums höher angesetzt sein.

Der alternative “Firestarter”-Mix des Stücks, der mit technoiden Beats und leichter Rammstein-Schlagseite daherkommt, zeigt BRAINSTORM von einer bislang unbekannten Seite. Wirklich besser wird das Stück dabei jedoch nicht. Mit “Breathe” hat man außerdem den Japan-Bonustrack des “Liquid Monster”-Albums als Bonus dazugepackt, eine nette Sache für die europäischen Fans, denen aber auch rasch klar werden dürfte, warum es der Song nicht zum regulären Bestandteil des Albums geschafft hat.

Das Cover-Artwork ist stark an das Design der unlängst erschienenen “Honey From The B’s”-DVD angelehnt. Und auch bei den beiden zusätzlichen Live-Stücken “Worlds Are Coming Through” handelt es sich um eine Zweitverwertung des DVD-Materials im Audio-Format. Qualitativ können sich die Aufnahmen vom Budapester Sziget-Festival durchaus hören lassen, ob sie jedoch einen zusätzlichen Kaufanreiz darstellen, muss der Fan für sich selbst entscheiden.

Unverkennbar BRAINSTORM – das wird schon mit dem Anfangsriff des Openers ´Fire Walk With Me´ deutlich, obwohl die recht harte Nummer durchaus mit Neuerungen überrascht. Der Sound wirkt einen Tick moderner, und der Refrain zeigt eher Hardcore-Schlagseite als die bekannten melodischen Chöre. Dazu passt allerdings gut das nachfolgende brachiale ´Breathe´, das als Bonus auf der Japan-Fassung des letzten Albums „Liquid Monster“ erschien. Mit Liveaufnahmen der Tracks ´Worlds Are Coming Through´ und ´Painside´ sowie einer etwas gewagten Remix-Fassung von ´Fire Walk With Me´ mit Ministry-Anleihen dürfte diese EP für alle BRAINSTORM-Fans interessant genug sein, um die Wartezeit bis zum neuen Album im Januar zu überbrücken.

BRAINSTORM gelten im Allgemeinen als eine der fleißigsten inländischen Metal-Kapellen. Die Truppe um den zweigleisig aktiven Sänger Andy B. Franck hat sich in den vergangenen Jahren besonders durch eine stete Live-Präsenz nach oben gekämpft, jedoch auch im regelmäßigen Zwei-Jahres-Rhythmus einen neuen Albumkracher ins Rennen geschickt. Nach “Liquid Monster” aus dem Jahre 2005 war in diesem Jahr also wieder mit einem neuen Release zu rechnen, der allerdings zugunsten einiger Re-Releases und der Herausgabe der ersten DVD zunächst einmal nach hinten geschoben wurde.

Dennoch bleiben die süddeutschen Power-Metaller ihren Grundsätzen treu und bringen zumindest schon einmal einen kleinen Vorgeschmack zu ihrem im Frühjahr 2008 geplanten Output “Downburst” auf den Markt. Unter dem verheißungsvollen Titel “Fire Walk With Me” gibt es ein knappes halbes Jahr im Voraus bereits die erste Single, die sich rein musikalisch schon recht stark am jüngsten Werk orientiert, jedoch noch nicht so rasch zu zünden vermag wie die Tracks von “Liquid Monster”. Dies stellt sich spätestens im direkten Vergleich mit Nummern wie ‘Worlds Are Coming Through’ und ‘Painside’ heraus, die hier als Live-Bonus enthalten sind und in Sachen Ohrwurm-Tauglichkeit die Nase vorn haben. Dafür überzeugt jedoch dann der fulminante Brecher ‘Breathe’ mit wuchtigen Doublebass-Geschossen und brutalen Grooves – Trademarks, die man an BRAINSTORM seit jeher schätzt und liebt.

Indes ist “Fire Walk With Me” definitiv ein zweischneidiges Schwert; die neuen Tracks werden auch auf dem Album zu hören sein (wobei das Titelstück noch den letzten Schwung vermissen lässt), die Live-Ausschnitte sind bereits von der DVD bekannt und der Firestarter-Mix von ‘Fire Walk With Me’ bringt das Stück in einer verstärkt Club-orientierten Fassung auch nicht wirklich weiter. Wer den Release des neuen Materials nicht mehr abwarten kann, darf natürlich gerne zugreifen. Aber der lohnenswertere Weg führt auf jeden Fall direkt zu “Downburst”!
